Propaganda Techniques and film go so well together. I really like to do film making projects with my students. A great way to get them introduced into editing video is to make iMovie Trailers. Check out my previous blog post on How to make an iMovie Trailer, or scroll through this post for info.

Propaganda Techniques with Middle Schoolers

My students learned propaganda techniques when I showed them a few samples of commercials and they had to figure out which type of propaganda was used. I then asked them to utilize iMovie trailers to create a product or in some way convince me to buy into their idea utilizing one of the available propaganda techniques

Students collaborated in small groups and picked a type of trailer template that they wanted to use. From their choice of template, they could modify the text and pictures that they downloaded to meet their needs. Later on, this would lead the students into making bigger projects and this was for them to understand film editing.

Propaganda Techniques in your Classroom

Years ago, I used to use Photostory with propaganda techniques so that my students could make films in class. It is much easier to now do this with the iPads, but I could still utilize this old lesson so the students could analyze propaganda in commercials and World War 2 Posters

 Propaganda Techniques for Interdisciplinary Lessons

Propaganda Techniques lend themselves well to a variety of classes. I have found most of my success utilizing collaboration with my ELA teachers and Social Studies teachers. I didn’t want Science teachers to be left out, so I had some of the students create Smores Flyers on Energy with propaganda.

Propaganda Techniques Final Thoughts

I will continue to utilize propaganda with my students, especially in our digital storytelling projects. What do you think of my students’ films? Can you easily figure out which type of propaganda they used? How have you utilized propaganda in your classroom? I have used it in a variety of sources that you can check out at the bottom of this post for related posts on Propaganda.

Teaching art & #videogames w/ @GamestarMech Day1 #artsed #gbl #lessonplan

Gamestar Mechanic is an excellent tool that allows students to play, learn and create video games.

One of the most important parts of game design is down to its basic concepts of RULES. On Day 1 of the lesson, we discuss why rules are so important. As they set up their accounts, we play a few familiar activites to get them used to rules:

Musical Chairs &

Red Light, Green Light 1-2-3

If you want to start using Gamestar Mechanic in your classroom, you can view/modify my Prezi Lesson Plan below, or check out more stuff that I have created on a recent Gamestar Mechanic post including videos and student samples by clicking the link

WW2 Propaganda Art using DrawCast on iPad

WW2 Propaganda Art Using DrawCast on iPad

ww2 propaganda art

My 8th graders studied WW2 Propaganda Art in their Social Studies class and Media Arts. The students became inspired to create original pieces of art with the DrawCast app. Check out the full gallery in this Edmodo Folder: 8th grade Grid Painting

WW2 Propaganda Art in a Grid Drawing

Students analyzed WW2 Propaganda Art and then used grid drawing techniques to further capture the style of the art period into Minecraft art. For more info on this technique, check out my previous post on Renaissance Grid Drawing.

WW2 Propaganda Art Directions for Students

One of the first things that the students had to do was analyze and get inspired by artworks that more than likely used the Renaissance Grid Drawing technique. The students and I found some great samples of artworks in this 80+ WW2 Propaganda Posters collection

After viewing and analyzing the artworks the students had to:

  1. Download the 1/4″ grid that I created for them from Edmodo

  2. Open up that grid in the DrawCast App

  3. On the Foreground layer, they should make up a line drawing that shows:

  4. One type of propaganda, a generic propaganda type and patriotism

  5. Color in Lightly over the whole grid

  6. Turn the grid drawing into Minecraft Art (to be seen in a future post).

  7. Utilize skills learned from previous DrawCast Female Art Project

You can get more detailed instructions on this lesson from a WW2 Propaganda Posters pdf

 WW2 Propaganda Art Lesson Plan

In years past, I have done a variety of Propaganda projects that have been modified to fit a certain grade level. Here is a great Powerpoint full of WW2 Propaganda Art as samples and writing prompts:

Check out some of my previous Propaganda projects. Not all of them are based on WW2 Propaganda Art, but more like the quality of convincing others with their art. In the old days, the kids made Propaganda Animoto Videos now we are on YouTube – which you will see in an upcoming post.
