Georgia O'Keeffe inspired digital paintings done in DrawCast

Georgia O’Keeffe Digital Paintings

Georgia O’Keeffe could very well be one of the greatest female artists of all time- definitely one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. My students did a web quest on Georgia O’Keeffe, a lot of them gave them a summary of what her life was about. I had them explore some of the artwork that she made and together they collaborated on what her artwork had in common.

Georgia O’Keeffe Lesson Plan

Years ago, I made this Google Drive slideshow lesson plan that gave a lot more detailed info on Georgia  O’Keeffe, but it also gave instructions to the students as they painted a watercolor painting of a still-life collection.

Once the students knew a little bit about Georgia O’Keeffe, they started to download public domain photos. The goal was to utilize the How to Trace Photographs in DrawCast tutorials that I made. The students would trace three photos similar to Georgia O’Keeffe’s subject matter: Animal Skulls, New Mexico Landscape and Flowers. Here is a collection of some of their work that they made in DrawCast.

Frida Kahlo Paintings - DrawCast Digital Self Portraits Lesson Plan

Frida Kahlo Paintings

Frida Kahlo paintings are some of the most bizarre, unique and passionate self portraits around. She could very well be one of the greatest female artists of all time definitely one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. My students did a web quest on Frida Kahlo paintings, a lot of them gave them a summary of what her life was about. I had them explore some of the artwork that she made and together they collaborated on what her artwork had in common.

Once the students knew a little bit about Frida Kahlo Paintings, they started to take photos of themselves. The goal was to utilize the How to Trace Photographs in DrawCast tutorials that I made. The students would trace three photos similar to Frida Kahlo Paintings of her self-portraits. Here is a collection of some of their work that they made in DrawCast. Last semester, my students did a very similar project when they made pieces of DrawCast art based off of Fauvist painters.

After the students created their three artworks, they would then arrange all three into a collection using Pic Collage App. The students could cut out and stack the various images on top of one another. They could also add simple effects or stickers to their collages. The final piece of art could be saved to their camera roll, and then shared with the class with Edmodo or Kidblog – so they could give each other some feedback.

Here are the written directions that I gave the students as they wrapped up their collages and had to expand upon what they did: Complete drawcast work on female artists

DrawCast also has a great option to export their art into a speed drawing to a YouTube video. The students got to pick their own music and I turned all of their videos into a YouTube playlist

How have you used DrawCast or Pic Collage to make digital art like these Frida Kahlo Paintings?

Google Sketchup dream house gallery

Google Sketchup Dream Houses

I can’t take much credit for this Google Sketchup project. The following samples of dream houses are the work of my two 8th grade girls who planned this concept. To read more about our project, check out Google Sketchup Flipped Class.  You can download this free program from CNET if you want to try it out. These students took lessons on how to build certain concepts that would be found in their dream home.

 Why use Google Sketchup?

  • A free program

  • Teaches 3D modeling tools

  • Promotes future art careers in engineering and architecture

  • Works with other Google tools like Google Earth

  • Can import/export other Google Sketchup models

Dream House Requirements w/ Google Sketchup

After working with my student, we decided that she would show off some of the following basics concepts in their dream houses. It should have a living room, tv, couch, chair, stairs, swimming pool and a second floor. We also encouraged the students to paint everything within their dream house. Some of them also got to play around with the 3D text tool to type something on it such as their name.

Downside of Google Sketchup – 3D Warehouse

If you are not careful with Google Sketchup, your students MAY just want to get everything for their dream house from the 3D Warehouse. Google Sketchup has an online directory of 3D models (nearly everything you can think of) that have been made by users from around the world. Students can also upload THEIR project to the warehouse when they are done with the project. I made the poor decision for my previous lessons of using Google Dreamhouse samples in Sketchup during last semester and last year to let them explore the 3D Warehouse.

Google Sketchup Tutorials

Now, I can’t take any credit for these either. Years ago, I downloaded some of the Sketchup tutorials from YouTube and sent them to SchoolTube so my students could watch them during the school day. You can use the link for your class, but until then:

How would you plan to use Google Sketchup in your class?
