My 7th graders studied WW2 Propaganda posters and became inspired to create original pieces of art with the DrawCast app. Check out the full gallery in this DrawCast Grid Painting Edmodo Folder

WW2 Propaganda Posters in a Grid Drawing

Students analyzed WW2 Propaganda Posters and then used grid drawing techniques to further capture the style of the art period into Minecraft art. For more info on this technique, check out my previous post on Renaissance Grid Drawing.

One of the first things that the students had to do was analyze and get inspired by artworks that more than likely used the Renaissance Grid Drawing technique. The students and I found some great samples of artworks in this 80+ WW2 Propaganda Posters collection

After viewing and analyzing the artworks the students had to:

  1. Download the 1/4″ grid that I created for them from Edmodo

  2. Open up that grid in the DrawCast App

  3. On the Foreground layer, they should make up a line drawing that shows:

  4. One type of propaganda, a generic propaganda type and patriotism

  5. Color in Lightly over the whole grid

  6. Turn the grid drawing into Minecraft Art (to be seen in a future post).

  7. Utilize skills learned from previous DrawCast Female Art Project

You can get more detailed instructions on this lesson from a WW2 Propaganda Posters pdf

WW2 Propaganda Posters Lesson Plan

In years past, I have done a variety of Propaganda projects that have been modified to fit a certain grade level. Here is a great Powerpoint my collaborating ELA teacher made up full of WW2 Propaganda Posters as samples and writing prompts:

Check out some of my previous Propaganda projects. Not all of them are based on WW2 Propaganda Posters, but more like the quality of convincing others with their art. In the old days, the kids made Propaganda Animoto Videos now we are on YouTube – which you will see in an upcoming post.

What do you need to know for BWMS Media Arts

media arts syllabus
See how I used QR codes and Aurasma (by following the ArtTech channel) to connect with parents and students

This year, I am hoping to go as paperless as possible. The major advantage is turning my syllabus into a digital file. Now instead of printing off 300+ papers, the syllabus is a PDF where the parents can type out the student name, parent name and more

Media Arts Syllabi

There are two ways that you can access the syllabi. One way is to open up this Edmodo Folder, it has all of the files that my students would access during their first week of school.

The other way is that you can click on the file below depending on your grade level to access. BUT FIRST THE DIRECTIONS:

  1. Parents/Students should open up the PDF file and read through the syllabus to familiarize themselves with the rules, procedures, and expectations of the Media Arts class.

  2. Go to Page 3 in the document. At the bottom is a section to type out the student name and parent name. If a parent doesn’t want their child to use their own mobile device in class, they should write their name too.

  3. Hit the “submit by email” button, which will then open up an email window. If the parent would email me their information, I would then be able to grade the assignment. The sooner I get this information back, the better the student’s grade.

Renaissance grid drawing on iPad w/ DrawCast

Renaissance Grid Drawing with the DrawCast app

renaissance grid drawing of anatomy 6th graders studied the characteristics of Renaissance grid drawings and were then sent to the task to recreate this out of Minecraft blocks. Check out the Edmodo folder of DrawCast grid paintings of Renaissance Art

Renaissance Grid Drawing by Albrecht Durer

Renaissance Grid Drawing was a technique used by artists of the time period like Albrecht Durer to capture proportion and distortion in their artwork

Renaissance Grid Drawing Directions

One of the first things that the students had to do was analyze and get inspired by artworks that more than likely used the Renaissance Grid Drawing technique. The students and I found some great samples of artworks in the History Channel’s page on The Italian Renaissance

After viewing and analyzing the artworks the students had to:

  1. Download the 1/4″ grid that I created for them from Edmodo

  2. Open up that grid in the DrawCast App

  3. On the Foreground layer, they should make up a line drawing that shows:

  4. Inspiration from Anatomy, Religion and Shows Depth

  5. Color in Lightly over the whole grid

  6. Turn the grid drawing into Minecraft Art (to be seen in a future post).

  7. Utilize skills learned from previous DrawCast Female Art Project

Renaissance Grid Drawing Lesson Plan

Renaissance Grid Drawing is something that I have been doing for years now with my students. I have modified this project from an older pre-existing PPT starting on slide 18

Renaissance Grid Drawing Samples of Student Work

Through the years, we have done a variety of art projects that utilize the Renaissance Grid Drawing concept. We have taken photos of the students and they copied grid by grid to created Grid Drawing Self Portraits. Some of the students changed the shape of the grid, such as in the Power Point below, for a distorted grid portrait. For Black History Month celebration, whole classes collaborated on a massive dilated Renaissance Grid Drawing based on a notable celebrity.

The next step will be how these students will create a dilated grid drawing in Minecraft

Digital storytelling tools : GoAnimate Guest blog post

Digital storytelling tools : GoAnimate for Schools

Digital storytelling tools are one of the essential things I do in my class. Luckily, I received a plug from Sean Junkins I was recently asked to be a guest blogger for GoAnimate

digital storytelling tools guest post

Click the pic for my guest post

Digital Storytelling Tool GoAnimate to Touch Lives sample….

I wanted to do something for my schoolthat would make a difference.

We recently became a PBIS school (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). We knew there were areas for improvements with regards to the students’ behavior, such as respect, and what respect looks like. I wanted my students to help out by creating Public Service Announcements to play on the school’s closed TV network and advertise these positive behaviors……

Digital Storytelling Tools : Using Animation

I went to school for animation, and I have always been passionate about it as a digital storytelling tool in my classroom. Not to mention just my classroom, but others. But before my guest blog on GoAnimate I used other types of animation in my classroom.

One of my favorite tools that I have used has to be Animation Creator as a digital storytelling tool. Another would be using the webcam of the netbook computers. Webcam Motion was used for the kids to change their Edmodo avatars. LooGix was another way for them to make animated gifs. But see how I used animation as an anti-bullying tool:

Peer review feedback via iBook for Publishing project

Peer review feedback makes better student writers

Peer review feedback can really help some students to become better writers. For this lesson plan, after my students published their writing about animation, their peers would review it.

Everything was published into an iBook and then my students could download it to their ipads and read each other’s writing.

Peer review feedback : Check out the iBook

My 7th graders and I compiled an iBook about their Toontastic cartoons and stories that they wrote. Prior to giving their peer review feedback they had to download the iBook from Edmodo. You can check out the complete Toontastic Memoir iBook or the previous lesson plan about using Toontastic as a Digital Storytelling tool

Peer review feedback : Screencap Gallery of Work

Each student had to read another student’s work, and then provide peer review feedback using the iBook’s features.

Probably one of the neatest things was to highlight a particular passage, and then insert a note that gave a bit more feedback.

Peer review feedback : How to Share Feedback

The problem with having thirty iPads is how will the students receive their peer review feedback? The good thing is that you can put ALL students work in it from both classes, so that everyone can see each other’s work. BUT I was faced with the problem was how could a student share what they posted AND let the writer learn from it.

I had the 7th graders take a screen capture of this peer review feedback. All of my students had an Edmodo account and Kidblog. The downside of using Edmodo would be that making this feedback public for the whole class to see. BUT the good thing was that everyone else could see the feedback and the original writing.

I think iBook has a LOT of potentials, especially when the students can now become content creators and not just content receivers. See my other animation resources to help with writing:

Explain Everything iPad App Flipped Tutorials -How To Make Digital Art

Explain Everything iPad App overview

Explain Everything iPad App is a great way for people to share their findings and discussions in an app. I recently made an explanation of Explain Everything in my iTunes course: “Students as Content Creators.”

explain everything ipad app youtube playlist screencap

Explain Everything iPad App helped my students make a great collection of flipped tutorials on how to make DrawCast art

Explain Everything iPad App is great because:

  • Can import media from other apps like Google Drive, Evernote or Dropbox

  • Turns boring old slide shows into more engaging movies

  • The “slide show” movie can be exported to the camera roll or YouTube

  • Perfect for the Flipped Classroom, like when my students Taught Google Sketchup

  • Explain Everything iPad App is affordable and powerful. $3 on iTunes Store

Why we chose the Explain Everything iPad App in class

I was frustrated with the fact that my students weren’t following directions in their DrawCast / Female art project. Apparently, they felt that the written and video directions were too confusing. My previous post about How to Trace Photograph with DrawCast had a video tutorial playlist AND written directions. But for some reason or another, Explaining Everything wasn’t helping my students.

As some of the students finished up early, I had them follow these Complete drawcast work on female artists directions. They opened up the Explain Everything iPad App and the guidelines were that their film needed to have the following:

  1.  Movie made with Explain Everything iPad App needs to explain step by step of project

  2. Explain everything about inspiration from the artist

  3. Explain everything about the artist (a biography)

  4. Explain everything about three of the artist’s notable pieces of art

  5. Get creative with the app and export the film to camera roll or YouTube

Explain Everything iPad App Movies on YouTube

The students could basically create a slide show and record their voice as the narration. Some of the students didn’t want to talk in the Explain Everything iPad app movie, so they used a laser pointer. Yes, you could trace your finger around as a pointer to guide the viewer and then advance to the next slide.

The students made more of a “student friendly” approach to the project which they could then export the video/slide show to YouTube. I then compiled a list of all of their projects for future students into a YouTube playlist.

Video games in school : If you use Gamestar Mechanic

Video Games In School : Make your Own Game

video games in school

I have made a few posts about video games in school. Some of my favorite things that I have done with the video games in school project are my resources using Gamestar Mechanic. More recently I have taken the video game concept where my students utilized Xbox Kinect and Minecraft to Make Art

video games in school minecraft art

Video Games in School : Starting off with Hopscotch

I tend to start off my video games in school project by connecting to games that most kids will understand. Hopscotch, Musical Chairs or Tic-Tac-Toe all have common ideas of winning/losing, rules and objective. This propels the students into the next stage of the project

Video Games in School : Learn, Play and Create

Are you being pressured by your Principal to utilize more projects in your classroom based around the STEMS standards? Are your students bored with projects and you have no way to connect with them? Does it seem that they only want to talk about how far they made it on the Zombie level of Call of Duty, and not how important your instruction will mean to their future? Well then, look no further because now you will have the opportunity to teach to your students’ strengths and interests as they create video games in school utilizing the free web site – Gamestar Mechanic……..

The students have to play video games in school prior to creating their own game. The concept is all about going through a quest to play games and earn objects that they will utilize when they create their own video games.
